What is the Kyoto Protocol?

It’s crucial to know what Kyoto Protocol is. Actually, it’s one of the steps that lead to the climatic improvements on the whole planet. Kyoto Treaty or Kyoto agreement is the international instrument signed in 1997 by 142 economically developed countries around the globe. It deals with the reduction of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere of our planet that is the main factor of deterring global warming.

This agreement became inevitable because of the world Powers’ enormous amount of carbon dioxide and methane emissions, resulting in the total atmospheric heating. If this devastating for our planet process is not stopped soon, it could lead to mega-floods and desertification of the productive lands, as a consequence of ice melt and sea-level rise.

After the signing of the Kyoto protocol, it was clear that it would be the first of many more to come. The term of the protocol’s first period is from 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2012. Under the agreement, all countries commit themselves to reduce air emissions within the period specified in the protocol. The explicit aim of the restrictions is the reduction of the cumulative average emissions of the 6 types of toxic gaseous substances – CO2 (carbon dioxide), CH4 (methane), N2O (nitrous oxide), fluorocarbons, sulphur hexafluoride – by 5.2% more than in 1990. The leaders – EU countries, Eastern European countries and Baltic States, USA, Canada, Russia, and Ukraine – shouldered the responsibility. It’s noted that such countries as China and India (their speed of development is ahead of almost all the above-mentioned countries) have officially moved away from the participation in that memorandum.

All the scientists decided that a couple of ways of the reduction of toxic emissions could prevent the worldwide nature disaster:

  • Start using techs that are friendlier to the environment.
  • Implement energy-saving technologies and fuel cleaning.

The main drawbacks of those two points are enormous costs that is why the world market isn’t able to solve this problem independently. Pollution abatement is the benefit for society as a whole and the reorganization of production is the task for the business. So, it’s not cost-effective for the entrepreneurs to support the initiative of pollution control and prevention since it, all in all, accounts for the losses. The data presents a very clear result: it’s crucial to develop the state adjustment mechanism. Since airspace is common for our entire planet, the international Kyoto protocol and other similar agreements are inevitable for our world.
