Although since the time when Nikolai Vasilyevich created the imperishable work “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka”, not so much time has passed on the scale of the whole universe, this period was enough for humanity to “make the legend come true”.

This is not only about a significant narrowing of the Dnipro river bed as apart from the negative aspects, there are also positive ones, such as the creation of reservoirs whose main task is to supply the arid regions of the country with water. The ecology of the Dnipro river is deteriorating every year and is close to disaster. Of course, the Dnipro River is the country’s main artery including the navigable one. That is why it is very important today to seriously think about preventing a tragedy.
The environmental problems of the Dnipro river and methods for solving them require an integrated approach in light of the fact that improving and stabilizing the situation will require both serious financial support and human and temporary resources. This is because the main industrial regions of Ukraine, such as Dnipro, Zaporizhia, Kyiv, Kaniv, Kremenchuk, are concentrated in close proximity to the main waterway.
The water from the river is actively consumed by enterprises for industrial purposes and, after partial treatment through the reverse cycle system, are returned to the Dnipro river. We use the Dnieper waters for household needs while collector treatment systems are far from being modernized in all cities of Ukraine.
If we talk about the Dnipro river as a navigable canal, in this industry, too, not everything is as smooth as we would like, due to the fact that here, like on roads, standards must be respected. But, unfortunately, Ukraine is still not able to afford the widespread implementation of innovative technologies. In addition, the program for the prevention of the ecological catastrophe of the Dnipro river requires an integrated approach involving both independent scientists, ecologists, and representatives of government bodies.
When solving the environmental problems of the Dnipro river, one cannot but take into account the fact that this is not an independent artery but a powerful aquifer system that includes many tributaries the ecological state of which also causes concern.
