For a couple of weeks now, people living in Ukraine have been complaining about air problems. At the moment, there still remains a smog in Kyiv, although a thick fog has already cleared. According to the available data, the worst situation with air pollution is taking place on the Kharkiv block (134 points). With such indicators, it is better not to ventilate the apartment and not go for a walk in this district. The cleanest districts are: VDNH (6 points), Podil (19 points), as well as Rusanivka (20 points), Osokorky (43 points), Borshchahivka (48 points).

Where did smog appear from in Ukraine?
In the autumn, the level of air pollution usually rises in Kyiv. This is associated with the illegal burning of fallen leaves and blazing peatlands. Plus, this time of year is characterized by inversion due to which air circulation is slowing down. As a result, waste products (for example, smoke) cannot rise high enough to dissipate.
The droplets of fog begin to mix with chemicals in the air resulting in smog.
In fact, all Ukrainians inhale pollutants of 3 types:
- Micro-dust or “suspended substances”: soot, cement crumbs and various industrial products. Inhalation of such a micro-dust may cause the heart disease and problems with blood vessels.
- Carbon monoxide as well as carbon dioxide. They are formed in the process of the combustion of coal, oil or natural gas.
- Harmful elements presented in the form of gases, for example, nitric oxide or hydrogen fluoride.
The atmosphere may contain the listed substances in normal quantities as in small quantities they do not cause harm to health. However, smog in Kyiv proves that the content of pollutants in the air has exceeded the norm a long time ago.
Smog in Kyiv: what to expect?
Many experts claim that the pollution exceedance is not critical but local laboratories should take samples 5-10 times a day. However, they do it one-time and manually. Ukraine should be buying modern systems for monitoring air quality similar to those that are used in the EU. Such laboratories cost about 10 million hryvnias but they need to be installed in each district.
So far, the only hope is for a change in the weather. In the nearest future, a decrease in air temperature is expected in Kyiv as well as an increase in wind speed. This will not contribute to the further accumulation of harmful impurities in the atmosphere.
